The Unfolding of You: A Leader’s Journey Through Transformation
By Kristin Gallatin, Savvy Leader Podcast
Transformation is one of the most overused words in leadership… and one of the least understood.
Real transformation doesn’t happen because you scheduled a mindset shift.
It doesn’t happen because you downloaded a new planner or committed to a 30-day challenge.
Real transformation begins the moment the life you’ve built stops fitting who you truly are.
And sometimes, that moment arrives without warning.
The Identity I Didn’t Even Know I Carried
For decades, I played the role of the “I got it girl.”
The dependable one.
The fixer.
The leader who could take on anything and deliver it flawlessly.
That identity made me successful — but it also made me tired.
Without realizing it, I had tied my worth to how much value I could give, how much I could carry, and how little I needed from others.
Then life shifted. Suddenly and completely.
When Everything Changes Overnight
After my husband’s accident, my life didn’t just slow down — it stopped.
I stepped into the role of full-time caregiver, a role I was never designed for, yet found myself navigating through instinct and grit.
Caregiving is not my natural strength.
It requires patience and presence, and I am impatient and task-focused by nature.
But I leaned on what I did have:
-
organization
-
efficiency
-
leadership instincts
-
and kindness when I could manage it
And while I cared for him, my body began sounding its own alarm.
A new heart condition.
A warning that my stress level had crossed from “unsustainable” to “dangerous.”
My life, my work, and my identity could not continue as they were.
Something had to change — and not just externally.
I had to change.
The Things You Only Hear in the Quiet
Once the busy-ness was stripped away, the truth became louder.
I could finally hear the parts of myself I had ignored for years:
-
What exhausted me
-
What mattered to me
-
What I valued
-
What I had outgrown
When life gets quiet, you finally see the invisible pulls that have shaped you.
You see how much of yourself you’ve given away.
You see what needs to be let go so a new version of you can emerge.
As one speaker once said:
“The former you and the new you cannot live in the same place.”
And she was right.
A Bold Shift: RV Life
When everything became too heavy — the house, the responsibilities, the feeling of being stuck — we made a big decision.
We sold our home and moved into a fifth-wheel toy hauler.
RV life met us halfway. It helped us:
-
shrink our lifestyle
-
simplify our obligations
-
let go of noise
-
add some adventure back into our lives
But it wasn’t easy.
RV life can be isolating.
We miss traditions, familiar routines, and the people we love.
Still, it gave us space — space to breathe, to reconnect, and to rebuild.
It allowed the unfolding to begin.
Leadership Lessons From This Season
Transformation changed how I lead, how I show up, and how I make decisions.
Here are the lessons this season taught me:
-
Honor the reason transformation arrived. Change doesn’t show up without purpose.
-
Bring your experience with you. Your history becomes a leadership asset during uncertainty.
-
Let go of what no longer fits. Old expectations, systems, and mindsets make room for new growth.
-
Slowing down creates clarity. Rest is a strategy, not a weakness.
-
Your values keep you grounded. Clarity comes when your priorities are aligned with your choices.
-
Vulnerability strengthens leadership. Being human makes you relatable, not replaceable.
-
Every transformation expands your leadership capacity. You emerge wiser, grounded, and more resilient.
If You’re In Your Own Season of Change
Know this:
You’re not lost.
You’re evolving.
And while the process may be uncomfortable, it’s leading you somewhere meaningful.
Sometimes the tide pulls you forward before you’re ready.
Sometimes circumstances force you into a new identity.
And sometimes your own heart whispers:
“It’s time to become who you were meant to be.”
This is the unfolding — the transition between what was and what will be.
And it’s where the most powerful leaders are created.
