Becoming the Leader I Needed: A Turning Point in Confidence, Influence, and Human-Centered Leadership

Becoming the Leader I Needed: A Turning Point in Confidence, Influence, and Human-Centered Leadership

There’s a moment in every leader’s journey when something changes—subtly at first, then unmistakably. For me, it happened in an ordinary corporate training room on an ordinary workday… but it changed the entire trajectory of my career.

I suddenly realized that the people leading the training—the people I admired, respected, and once thought were operating on some higher level—weren’t actually “special.”
They were good at their jobs, yes. But they weren’t gifted, superhuman, or operating with any rare skill I couldn’t develop myself.

And in that moment, it hit me:

There was absolutely nothing stopping me from becoming anything I wanted to be.
If I wanted to do their job, or rise above it, I could. And I would.

That realization didn’t inflate my ego; it built my confidence. It shifted my focus from self-doubt to self-development. It helped me understand that leadership wasn’t about superiority—it was about responsibility.

The Philosophy That Changed Everything

As I began stepping into leadership roles, I developed a belief that became the foundation of how I led every team, every store, every business:

“Appreciate people for exactly who they are and what they have to offer. Nothing more, nothing less.”

People don’t need to be molded into someone else’s ideal.
They don’t need to be pushed into strengths they don’t possess.
They don’t need to be compared, corrected, or controlled.

They need to be understood.
They need to be supported.
They need to know that who they already are matters.

And when people feel valued—not for who you want them to become, but for who they already are—they show up differently. They work differently. They trust differently.

The Intention That Defined My Leadership Style

Some leaders want compliance.
Others want control.
I wanted something entirely different:

“To inspire my team to want to work—and to do that work for me… so much so that they didn’t want to disappoint me.”

Not out of fear.
Not out of obligation.
But out of pride, respect, and shared purpose.

That intention shaped every coaching conversation, every schedule, every tough call, every celebration.

I became the leader who sat on the floor with employees during crises, who lifted heavy freight when the team was shorthanded, who listened first and fixed second, and who never asked anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself.

Leadership wasn’t a position.
Leadership was a relationship.

The Words I’ll Never Forget

After I earned a significant promotion—one I worked years for—a former manager sent me a message that brought tears to my eyes. It read:

“Our company just got a little bit better today.”

Those words stayed with me because they weren’t about my skills, my metrics, or my resume.
They were about my character.

And that’s what leadership is always about—who you are, not just what you do.

Why I Share This Story

Because there is someone reading this right now who needs to hear what I learned in that training room:

You are not less capable than the people you look up to.
You are not behind.
You are not lacking.
You are not limited.

You can grow into any version of yourself you choose.

And more importantly—you don’t need a title to start leading.

You just need the intention, the heart, and the willingness to see people for who they truly are.

🎧 Savvy Review: Take Control of Your Life by Mel Robbins

🎧 Savvy Review: Take Control of Your Life by Mel Robbins

Every once in a while, I come across an audiobook that feels less like a listen and more like an experience—one that sits with you, nudges you, challenges you, and whispers, “You’re not the only one figuring this out.”
Mel Robbins’ Take Control of Your Life did exactly that.

I’ve listened to a lot of personal development content over the years—some inspiring, some informative, and some that feel a bit like motivational popcorn: tasty, quick, and forgettable.
This one is different.

What makes Take Control of Your Life one of my all-time favorite listens is simple:
you get to hear real people, in real coaching sessions, working through real and deeply relatable challenges.
Nothing is scripted. Nothing is polished. And because of that, everything lands.

Why This Audible Series Hit Me So Deeply

Mel doesn’t hold space in a quiet, passive “mm-hmm tell me more” kind of way.
She holds space like a laser-guided truth mirror—gently but firmly guiding each person toward the deeper pattern running their life.

Listening to these coaching sessions felt like sitting in the room with them.
Sometimes I’d find myself nodding along.
Sometimes I’d whisper, “Oof… yep. Been there.”
Sometimes I had to pause because the insight hit me square in the chest.

The beauty of hearing real people talk about their fears, hesitations, self-doubt, and crossroads is that it reminds us we’re not alone in our own stuck moments. And as someone who has spent a lifetime navigating reinventions, caregiving crises, business pivots, burnout, and that deep desire for personal freedom, these stories were mirrors.

🔍 Themes That Resonated with Me

1. Fear Isn’t the Enemy—Unexamined Fear Is

Every single coaching session revealed a person at war with the story they’d been telling themselves. I related to that more than I expected. Fear doesn’t disappear when we grow—it evolves. Mel shows you how to name it, interrupt it, and move anyway.

2. Your Past Shapes You, But It Doesn’t Get to Drive

Many of the participants come from complicated backgrounds—something I deeply understand. Mel helps them step out of old identities that no longer serve them. That layered healing is something I’ve spent years working through myself.

3. Courage Is Built in Small, Daily Choices

This series isn’t about giant life overhauls. It’s about taking the next right step—something I preach and practice in Savvy Living. The real transformations happen between the lines.

💡 My Biggest Takeaway

This audiobook reminded me that transformation rarely looks glamorous while it’s happening. It’s awkward. Emotional. Sometimes messy.

But hearing people open up about their fears in such an honest, vulnerable way left me thinking:
We all have the capacity to change—if we’re willing to look inward and take responsibility for our lives.

And that’s the heartbeat of the Savvy Living philosophy.

🎤 Who Should Listen to This

If you are…

  • at a crossroads

  • feeling stuck in a loop you can’t name

  • craving more courage, clarity, or direction

  • someone who appreciates real human stories over polished teaching

  • or simply ready to rethink the narrative you’ve been living…

…then this series will speak directly to your soul.

🌱 Final Thoughts

Take Control of Your Life is more than an audiobook—it’s a conversation, a mirror, and a gentle push in the right direction.

For me, it reaffirmed one of my core beliefs:
we gain power every time we tell the truth about what we want and who we are becoming.

Mel Robbins captures that beautifully.

If you’re ready for something honest, practical, and human, this one deserves a spot at the very top of your listening list.

🌄 Travelog ~ ABQ New Mexico: Two Weeks of Sunsets, Chilis, and High Mountain Views

🌄 ABQ New Mexico: Two Weeks of Sunsets, Chilis, and High Mountain Views

Our Central New Mexico adventure started just east of Albuquerque in Edgewood, where we parked our RV at the welcoming Route 66 RV Park. We stayed in this area for a couple of weeks, and the place quickly felt like home.

A huge shout-out goes to Melody, the campground manager, who is also the force behind the Red Arrow Grill food truck. She truly made our mornings memorable! We indulged in her spectacular cooking—that Hatch green chili cheese and sausage omelet and her classic biscuits and gravy are seriously the best way to start the day. Plus, there was always free, hot coffee flowing. Our dog, Bear, was just as happy with the park as we were!

We made sure to dive into the local culture, heading to Old Town Albuquerque to observe the beautiful traditions of Día de los Muertos.

Peaks, Culture, and Culinary Heat

One of the most moving parts of our trip was taking the tram up Sandia Mountain. At the summit, we visited the spot where my husband’s father’s ashes were scattered 35 years ago—a very meaningful tribute. We shared a sweet s’mores dessert and a glass of wine up there, simply soaking in the incredible view and the memory.

We also enjoyed a fantastic day trip to Santa Fe. Walking around the city is so peaceful; it felt like a perfect, relaxing Sunday afternoon. It’s beautiful, incredibly welcoming, and rich with Native culture. We spent time viewing magnificent artwork and, of course, sampling more delicious food.

Speaking of food, you can’t miss the green chili here—it’s everywhere and adds that perfect kick to every meal! We tried to eat like locals every chance we got. And for a bit of fun, we took a few casual drive-bys of some Breaking Bad filming locations—just a quick nod to pop culture!

The New Mexico Vibe

It was a truly wonderful experience. What I loved most about Central NM was being surrounded by those colorful Southwestern mountains, enjoying the breezy afternoons, and witnessing those incredible, never-ending sunsets.

This leg is done for now, and we're excited to continue our journey south to the SW corner of New Mexico. More natural beauty and surprises are definitely waiting for us!
